The book covers various forms of whipping, from ancient times to the 19th century, and across different cultures and contexts, including religious orders, prisons, schools, and even the boudoir. It examines not only the physical act of whipping but also its cultural, social, and even erotic significance. Illustrated, 544 pages in English. Book measures 7 7/8" x 5 5/8" x 1 1/2"
Condition: Condition – Very Good – Cover has some wear/discoloration. Gilt on cover and spine is strong. Spine shows wear to head, tail and along joints. Top edge untrimmed and soiled. Former owners (Lional Adgar Salt) ex-libris inside front cover. Back hinge is spilt but intact. Binding is a little loose. Please see photos.
